Dr. Kovner sees clients throughout the life span, many of whom have experienced trauma in their childhoods due to sexual and physical abuse and neglect. We know that individuals who were victimized during childhood and early adolescence, by threatened or actual incest, rape, and/or physical assault, tend to suffer more deeply when their early family life failed to be loving and supportive. They experience the world very differently than individuals with loving families and often react to trauma by becoming emotionally numb. Their ability to trust is destroyed and their ability to think and process the trauma is impaired. Symptoms may include a loss of time. They become stressed by exposure to the sensations, smells, sounds and images of the traumatic event. They may formed a “trauma bond” with their abuser and remain loyal to them. Severe neglect may result in difficulty forming close relationships. Traumatized individuals may have been diagnosed with any number of diagnoses such as ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, or PTSD. Any one of these diagnoses may be partly correct but do not address the bigger picture of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Dr. Kovner provides assessment and treatment to victims of trauma and stress using evidenced-based methods of therapy.
