About Family Counseling
Developing “effective” family relationships requires a foundation of trust, fondness and admiration and “turning to” each other (as opposed to turning away or against each other) for love, support and understanding. With this foundation, parents can influence, guide and connect with their children and adolescents on an emotional level, strengthening their bonds of attachment that will last a life time. When children and adolescents truly feel understood, they can tolerate the stress when they don’t get everything they want. We have to fill them up emotionally in order to help them tolerate stress. We have to model effective management of interpersonal negativity: Criticism, Defensiveness, Stone-walling and Contempt. Based on years of research on effective and happy relationships, Dr. Kovner teaches and guides families to use the skills proven to be most efficacious in creating lasting harmony.
When we invite discourse, opinions and dialogue with tolerance, love and understanding, we can effectively parent.Influence through love, acceptance, and understanding are social skills that are taught, modeled and practiced in therapy. The problems of life have always been present, but we must learn how to manage negativity when things don’t go our way. This requires changing perceptions, beliefs and opinions and modifying how we communicate those beliefs without letting our convictions and prior notions get in our way.
